Islam, and Secularism.

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِيمِ
Dengan menyebut nama Allah Yang Maha Pemurah lagi Maha Penyayang

The islamic civilization does not condone secularism. The word secullar is derived from the latin word saeculum which means "present age or this world" It is usually used in reference to any philosophy which forms its ethinc without references to religious dogmas. It was forst used in 1648 in the treaty of westphatia ata the end of religious war in the west.

In the concise oxford Dictionary (1958), secularism is defined as

'concerned with the affairs of this world, worldly, not sacred, not monastic, not ecclesiastical, temporal, profane'.

As stated at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/secularism, "secularism is the concept that goverment or other entities should  exist separately form religion and or religious beliefs. In one sense, secularism may assert the right to be free from religious rule and teachings. In another sense, it refer to the view that human activities and decisions, especially political ones, should be based on evidance, and facts unbiased by religious influance".

The term secularism was first coined by george jacob holyoake in 1841. He originally used it to refer to the practice of ethics of free thought. Holyoake wrote the following about secularism in his 1896 publication england secularism : "secularism is a code of duty pertaining to this life, founded on considerations purely human, and intended, unreliable or unbelievable. its essential principles are three :

1) The improvement of this life by the material means.
2) the science is the available providence of man
3) That it is good to do good. Whether there be other good or not, the good of the present life is good and it is good to seek that good

Subsequently, Holyoake held that secularism and secular ethics should take no inteest at all in religious questions as they were irrelevant.

In the social reality of religion ( Peguin Books, Limited ), Peter L. Berger defines secularism as the process by which sectors of society and culture are removed form the domination of religious institutions and symbols.

The contemporary islamic scholar Prof Dr Yusuf Qardhawi states in his book al hulul al mustawradah
( How the imported solutions disastrously affected or Ummah ),"for muslim socities, the acceptence of secularism means somethings totally different, as islam is a comrehensive system of worship ( Ibadah ) and legislation ( Syariah ), the acceptence of secularism means abandonment of syariah, a denial of the devine guidance, and a rejection of Allah S.W.T injuctions

It is indeed a false claim that shariah is not proper to the requirement of the present age. The acceptence of legislation formulated by human means a preferences of the human's limited knowlege and the experiences to the devine guidance Allah say in chapter baqarah, verse 40, "say! do you know better than Allah.

The prof adds, "secularism is inherited from the greek philosophy, especially that of aristotle, who argued that god neither controls nor know anything abouts this world. This is a helpless god as described by will durant. There is no wonders that such a god leave people to look after their own affairs.

How can He legislate for them when He is ignorant of their affairs? this is concept totally different from that of the muslim. We muslim believe that Allah is the sole creators, and sustainer of the world.
